On August 2, 1973 the Monroe Journal ran a “Photostory” about the homecoming service that was held at Old Scotland that year. Sara Nettles Bradley provided us with a copy of the newspaper article, so we could post it here for everyone to see.

From the August 2, 1973 edition of the Monroe Journal, p. 7-A. Julia Taylor, Brutus Bailey, Graydon Simmons, Clinton Rowell

“Former members and friends of the Old Scotland Presbyterian Church leave the historic landmark for another year as the annual homecoming is ended. Some of the older members of the congregation shown here are Graydon Simmons (standing in left door), Mrs. Julia Taylor (signing register), and Mrs. Brutus Bailey ( at top of stairs) with Clinton Rowell of Franklin.”

Dinner on the grounds in 1973 at Old Scotland Presbyterian Church Tunnel Springs Monroe County Alabama

“After the morning worship hour, friends and relatives of members of the old church gathered on the grounds for the traditional dinner served Southern style. There were tables and tables of old-fashioned goodies to delight anyone’s fancy.”

The article in the newspaper did not identify the people in the above photograph, but I recognize them because they are family members and very dear to me. The lady with the sunglasses was my Grandmother, Mrs. E. C. “Carl” Watson (Margaret Simmons Watson), of Monroeville. Mrs. Watson was a descendant of the Simmons and Dunn families. The children standing in front of her are her grandchildren (my brother and sister), Charlene and Chuck McMillan. We have all been attending homecoming since childhood and continue to attend as often as possible. I wasn’t in the photo, probably because I was busy trying to get some of Grandma’s famous chicken pie before it was gone. It was so good that there was always a rush to get to it. I liked it so much that one year for my birthday, I asked for my very own chicken pie. Grandma is with only in spirit now, but we continue to have fabulous food. My cousin Amanda Garrett makes a chicken pie much like Grandma's.
